No Child Left Behind Back Story
California needs to hire more credentialed teachers to meet the “highly qualified teacher” provision of the No Child Left Behind Act.
So I asked Deborah Hirsh, the chief administrator of the San Francisco Unified School District what they were doing to recruit more credentialed teachers.
Hirsh says proposition A, a parcel tax on the June ballot is expected to help. The measure would pay for higher salaries for new teachers. These incoming teachers would start out earning nearly $5,000 more that what they get today.
So, a starting teacher salary at the SFUSD would be $50,000. But there is more. On top of that, they would get $2,500 more if they teach math, science or special education and another $2,500 if they teach in low performing schools.
